7 small ways to try journaling instead of scrolling

To try journaling instead of scrolling, replace one habitual app-opening moment with a short note. Treat it as a small experiment, rather than a promise to transform all your phone use.

These seven ideas give you a concrete replacement action to try during an idle moment.

1. Choose one moment to experiment with

Pick a particular occasion: the first few minutes after lunch or the wait before a video call. “Use my phone less” is hard to act on. “write one line while waiting for the meeting” is specific. Leave the rest of the day alone while you see whether that swap fits.

2. Write what you came to the phone for

Before opening a feed, record the immediate reason if you know it. “Waiting for the bus and looking for something to do.” The entry does not need to judge the impulse. You may decide to scroll afterward. The experiment is noticing and making a deliberate choice.

3. Save the thought you would have posted

If you have a short observation, try keeping it privately first. “The streetlights came on while the sky was still pink.” A journal entry can stay unfinished, unpolished, or interesting only to you. There is no need to turn it into a message for an audience.

4. Make the alternative easy to find

Put your chosen journal somewhere obvious on your Home Screen. If you use iglu, its shortcuts and widgets are worth exploring as access points. Do not build a complicated phone setup before trying one entry. The replacement should be easier to begin than to maintain.

5. Use the room as your prompt

Look at one object around you and write why it is there. “The spare chair is still in the hallway after Sunday lunch.” This gives you a subject without requiring another online search for a prompt. You can finish as soon as the detail is recorded.

6. End the writing deliberately

Save the entry and choose the next action: put the phone down, return to the task, or open another app intentionally. Avoid turning the journal into another endless browsing activity. A single sentence can be enough for the experiment to count as tried.

7. Review the experiment without inventing results

After a few attempts, ask whether you liked the replacement and when it was awkward. If your aim is less scrolling, inspect your own device’s screen-time data rather than assuming it changed. Keep the swap only where it is useful. A journal is not a complete attention-management system.

One swap to try today

The next time you open your phone during an idle pause, write one sentence about what is happening around you. Iglu provides a private place for short thoughts. Its role here is to hold the entry. Whether you want to repeat the experiment is your decision.
